Discovering the Meaning of Prevention
A Workshop for Helping Professionals

Professionals in the helping professions are often expected to know about and speak to the full continuum of care – prevention, intervention, treatment and aftercare.  Yet few of us have had much formal training on the discipline and technology of prevention.  This course will give an overview of prevention including defining terms, community development, prevention strategies, science-based prevention and best practices in prevention.

Participants will be able to:

define prevention and discuss it in relation to the other components of the continuum of care

list Lofquist’s six technologies of prevention

bullet

describe science-based prevention

bullet

discuss the parameters of a comprehensive prevention plan

bullet

discuss multiple strategies over multiple populations.

Comprehensive Prevention of Problem Gambling Program Planning

Given that no progress has ever been made against any epidemic by treating only the casualties, it is incumbant upon those of us working in the problem gambling arena to embrace prevention programming. This course will examine the many facets of developing a comprehensive approach to problem gambling prevention programming.  An understanding of prevention principles will guide participants into developing their own approaches to problem gambling prevention.  Examples of prevention efforts from around the United States and Canada will be given.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

$       define prevention and discuss its connection with intervention and treatment

$       discuss several prevention strategies

$       discuss both risk and resiliency as it pertains to problem gambling prevention

$       describe several prevention models and processes

        outline a comprehensive problem gambling prevention plan
